The International Press Institute (IPI), the global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists for press freedom, is pleased to invite you to “Under Siege: Press Freedom and the Rule of Law in Turkey”. This event will analyse the current situation of press freedom in Turkey following the end of emergency rule this summer. Panellists – key journalists and lawyers from Turkey as well as top European human rights thinkers – will examine the media crackdown and the breakdown of the rule of law, offering first-person perspectives from Turkey. Importantly, they will also analyze the role that Turkey’s international partners, especially the European Union and Germany, can play in protecting fundamental rights in Turkey and will serve as a networking platform to further strengthen relationships of solidarity between the journalistic and legal communities in Germany and Turkey, and Europe at large.

The event will take place at the Representation of the European Union in Germany (Europäisches Haus) at Unter den Linden 78, 10117 Berlin, Germany, on November 28, from 9:30 to 13:30. It will consist of two main panels: The View from the Inside: How Independent Journalism Is Surviving Against the Odds in Turkey and Europe’s Role in Protecting Fundamental Rights in Turkey. The event will also be highlighting the I Subscribe campaign, an effort to support independent journalism in Turkey, led by IPI and its international partners.
