MEPs urge Member States to stop inciting fear and hatred of migrants and refugees

Published on 2016-12-13

EU member states should “refrain from inciting fear and hatred among their citizens towards migrants and asylum-seekers for political gain”, MEPs say in a resolution on the situation of fundamental rights in the EU, adopted on Tuesday 13 December, during the plenary session in Strasbourg.

The resolution, passed by 456 votes to 138 with 104 abstentions, addresses key fundamental rights challenged in the EU in 2015, notably in the fields of migration, protection of children and online threats. MEPs deplore the “increasing levels of hate speech from within certain institutions, political parties and media” and expect the EU to set an example of opposing hate speech within its institutions.
