Spain: EFJ/IFJ back RTVE’s decision not to broadcast football Super Cup in Saudi Arabia

The European and International Federation of Journalists (EFJ/IFJ) strongly support the decision of the Spanish Radio and Television Public Service (RTVE) to not broadcast the matches of the football Spanish Super Cup that will be held in Saudi Arabia next January. The competition, organised by the Spanish Federation of Football, is a national trophy that will be played abroad. The EFJ and the IFJ joined the Spanish affiliates Federacion de Asociaciones de la Prensa Espanola (FAPE), Federacion de Sindicatos de Periodistas (FeSP) and Federacion de Servicios a la Ciudadania de CC.OO (FSC-CC.OO) in backing the public broadcaster to not give…

Journalists face restrictions as Spain enacts gag law

Journalists and photographers will face a new wave of restrictions on their work as the Spanish government enacted the controversial public security law (also known as gag law or “Ley Mordaza” in Spanish) on 1 July, warned the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), who have joined their Spanish affiliates FAPE, FeSP, FSC-CC.OO. and ELA-Gizalan in calling for repeal of the law.  The Public Security Law makes a criminal offence “any unauthorised use of images or personal as well as professional data concerning police officers which may put at risk the safety of the…

Article 26 provides that “unauthorised use of pictures, films or personal/professional data of authorities or members of security forces will be considered as serious offence because they could put their personal or their family’s security in danger.” The sanction provided for is…
