Brussels Book Fair: hate speech and freedom of expression

The Council of Europe will be hosting a discussion/debate at the Brussels Book Fair from 22-25 February 2018. The theme of this year’s event will be hate speech and freedom of expression. The event is a round-table discussion, in French and usually involving 3 or 4 speakers, followed by questions and answers from visitors to the book fair. affichette conf 3

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is organising a seminar on Hate Speech at the Faculty of Journalism of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The EFJ GS Ricardo Gutiérrez will deliver a speech on EFJ project “Media Against Hate”, hate speech and ethical standards.

The European Commission will not legislate on illegal content online

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) welcomes Commissioner Jourova’s decision not to initiate  EU-wide legislation to fine internet companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and Microsoft, for failing to take down hate speech. “We would like to see the laws we have in place offline enforced also online”, EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova said on Thursday 28 September during a press conference. New study shows that media are under-resourced when covering migration

Media in many countries in the Euro-Mediterranean region don’t have enough resources and are unable to provide time, money and appropriate level of expertise needed to tell the migration story in context. This is the main finding of a recent study “How does the media on both sides of the Mediterranean report on migration?”, conducted by the Ethical Journalism Network (EJN) and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).
