{"id":1641,"date":"2014-12-14T20:04:28","date_gmt":"2014-12-14T19:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/europeanjournalists.org\/?p=1641"},"modified":"2014-12-14T20:04:28","modified_gmt":"2014-12-14T19:04:28","slug":"journalists-detained-in-turkey-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/europeanjournalists.org\/de\/2014\/12\/14\/journalists-detained-in-turkey-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalists detained in Turkey&#8230; again !"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tgs.org.tr\/file\/2014\/12\/zaman-620x330.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">People in Istanbul demonstrate against the arrests of Zaman newspaper journalists (photo : TGS)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Police forces in Turkey have today (14\/12\/2014) raided media outlets (Zaman newspaper and Samanyolu Television) known to be close to a US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah G\u00fclen.<\/p>\n<p>At least 23 people, including journalists and television producers, have been detained so far in Istanbul and elsewhere in the country and are apparently being accused of forming a criminal organization.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\"> Commenting this new operation, the Secretary General of the Journalists Union of Turkey (<strong>TGS<\/strong>, an EFJ affiliate) <strong>Mustafa Kuleli<\/strong> reminded that<\/span> <span class=\"hps atn\">&#8222;this operation is performed just a few days before the first anniversary of the b<\/span><span class=\"\">ribery and<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">corruption scandal (known as &#8222;17 December&#8220; scandal) that shocked the country a year ago, so this new move against our colleagues is in fact an operation against freedom and democracy in Turkey&#8220;. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" class=\"\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"hps\">Indicating that &#8222;<\/span>14 <span class=\"hps\">December&#8220; operation will be remembered as<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">a &#8222;black day&#8220;<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">in the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">history of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">Turkey<\/span> Mustafa Kuleli added : &#8222;<span class=\"\">Although<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">the journalists detained today may not have <\/span>reacted when other<span class=\"hps\"> colleagues were detained in the recent past, we<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">cannot approve<\/span> any of those <span class=\"hps\">arrests. <\/span><span class=\"hps\">What we experience today, like in the <\/span>Ergenekon, OdaTV or KCK Press cases, is <span class=\"hps\">not the rule of law. <\/span>We should know by now that <span class=\"hps\">no matter which group is targetted by the<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">persecution<\/span>, nobody <span class=\"hps\">must<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">stay silent.<\/span> The principles of our profession matter for us. We will continue to defend the journalists who are being <span class=\"hps\">punished<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">because of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">their reporting<\/span>&#8222;.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The EFJ President, <strong>Mogens Blicher Bjerreg\u00e5rd<\/strong>, strongly backed the TGS standing and expressed serious concern about the situation in Turkey. &#8222;The European Union, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and other intergovernmental institutions should take action in relation to Turkey. Only 10 days ago we together with the Council of Europe have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a new platform about early warnings on attacks on journalist, journalism and media.
