{"id":775,"date":"2014-11-06T07:32:48","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T06:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/e-f-j.eu\/?p=775"},"modified":"2014-11-06T07:32:48","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T06:32:48","slug":"efj-tells-yle-to-halt-job-cutting-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/europeanjournalists.org\/de\/2014\/11\/06\/efj-tells-yle-to-halt-job-cutting-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"EFJ tells Yle to halt job-cutting plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Finnish public broadcasting company Yle has announced on Monday 3 November about the imminent plan to reduce at least<strong> 185 permanent jobs<\/strong> as part of its cost-cutting measures.<\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement, the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) Initiates has sent<a title=\"EFJ letter to Yle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ifj.org\/fileadmin\/images\/EFJ\/collective_toolbox\/Letter_from_EFJ_to_Yle.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> a letter to CEO<\/a>, Mr <strong>Lauri Kivinen<\/strong>, and the management team of Yle, calling on them to engage in dialogue with the journalists\u2019 union, Suomen Journalistiliitto.<\/p>\n<p>According to Yle, the cost-cutting measures were introduced as a result of a funding shortfall. Earlier this year, the Finnish Parliament has decided to freeze an inflation-related increase on the so-called Yle tax in 2015 \u201cforcing the company to cut costs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The EFJ affiliate, <strong>Suomen Journalistiliitto<\/strong>, has started the negotiation with the Yle management about its job-cutting plan. The outcome of the negotiation will be announced on 12 November.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, the EFJ has told the Yle management to \u201cput quality of journalism first\u201d and to \u201cinvest in staff who are key in driving the organisation forward and producing high quality information\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The EFJ has told the management to try every effort to minimise the impact of the cost-cutting plan on the working conditions of journalists and the quality of journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA strong and independent public service broadcaster is crucial in maintaining a diverse media landscape and ensuring that the public interest of every citizen is well served in Finland\u2026and Yle should lead by example as one of the leading public service broadcasters in Europe,\u201d emphaised the EFJ.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Finnish public broadcasting company Yle has announced on Monday 3 November about the imminent plan to reduce at least 185 permanent jobs as part of its cost-cutting measures.
