Freedom of expression and the situation of the Turkish media sector has become of growing international concern and criticism. It seems that developments in this field are considered as the litmus test for Turkey’s democratization efforts, in particularly also in view of the EU accession process.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) invited Utku Cakirözer, former editor-in-chief at daily newspaper Cumhurriyet; Banu Güven, journalist at IMECE TV, and Eylem Yanardagoglu, deputy director of the “New Media Department” at Kadir-Has-University to share their analysis of the situation of freedom of expression and the media sector in Turkey.  Current challenges and developments will be discussed with Christine Grau, member of cabinet of Commissioner Johannes Hahn and MEP Kati Piri (S&D/NL), Member of the AFET Committee in the European Parliament.
