GUE/NGL event on protecting journalists and whistleblowers to be held in honour of Daphne Caruana Galizia

January 30, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The assassination of the Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia last October is a tragic reminder of the ever-present dangers that crusading journalists and whistleblowers face on a daily basis – even when reporting here inside the EU.

The laws that purport to safeguard their and our basic human rights, professional dignity and media freedom are clearly inadequate. With Galizia’s murder and the ongoing cases against the LuxLeaks whistleblowers and Julian Assange, the EU still has a long way to go in offering proper protection for journalists and whistleblowers.

In honour of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the European United Left / Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) will be hosting a panel discussion:

‘PROTECTING THE TRUTH: Safety for Journalists and Whistleblowers’

Tuesday 30th January

18h00-21h00 Room A1G2, European Parliament in Brussels

Featuring the Caruana Galizia family and with contributions from Julian Assange, GUE/NGL MEPs from the ‘Panama Papers’ Inquiry Committee (Stelios Kouloglou, Miguel Urbán, Patrick Le Hyaric, Martin Schirdewan, Takis Hadjigeorgiou) as well as Javier Couso will discuss the state of play with representatives from the ICIJ and Reporters Without Borders.

There will also be a screening of the film, ‘Memoria de un crimen de guerra’.
