Media and democracy, FES workshop

April 26, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

In times of political gambling, minorities become the scapegoating target of populist leaders. In name of the freedom of expression, racist discourses are legitimised by the electorate choice of right-wing representation in the structures of power. Although some discourses are becoming obsolete, media magnifies the stereotypes and can influence the negative perceptions largely and inaccurately promoted and which is yet reinforced by strong political discourse. But (new) media can also be an instrument for mobilization, participation and change. How is media helping to build democracy and a new narrative for Europe? And how to tackle hate speech, racism and underrepresentation of minorities in media in Europe?

The aim of the meeting organized by ENAR and FES EU Office is to create a safe space where international experts can exchange their ideas, ventilate their local and national challenges and can hopefully be encouraged by other initiatives and community engagement examples that have inspired movements for greater social change and inclusion. Speakers will be invited to share their views about the challenges of current democratic models and the role of (new) media in this regard and will be also encouraged to promote empowering and attractive actions and media campaigns which led to effective civic participation and engagement of different communities.

Participating experts and initiatives are inter alia: Paul Nemitz, Director at DG Justice, European Commission; MEP Birgit Sippel, Member of the European Parliament; Renate Schröder, Director, European Federation of Journalists; Kahina Rabani, Collectif contre l’Islamophobie (FR) and Chadi Bahouth, New German Media Professionals (DE).
