Meeting of EU and Russian journalists

July 4, 2016 @ 10:00 am - July 5, 2016 @ 3:00 pm

The Role of Editorial Standards in Safeguarding Independent Journalism

St Petersburg, 3-5 July 2016

The EU Delegation to the Russian Federation, in association with the Russian Union of Journalists and the European Federation of Journalists is organizing the second in a series of meetings of EU and Russian journalists in 2016. After the first meeting in London devoted to the safety of journalists in digital age, the two-day event in St Petersburg will focus on challenges to independent and quality journalism posed by technological advances and growing political interventions in digital space. In its recent book “Journalism at Risk” (2015), the Council of Europe stresses that independent, high-quality journalism is more necessary than ever, and yet it is facing new threats and challenges in digital age.

The first day of the event in St Petersburg, Monday 4th July, will be devoted to professional meetings in the editorial offices of selected media outlets to discuss problems faced by independently-minded media and solutions to numerous obstacles found in the local context but often of universal nature. During a parallel editorial forum on the day, remaining delegates will have an opportunity to present and critique their outputs related to Russia and the EU to their colleagues.

On Tuesday 5th July, the Russian Union of Journalists will host a roundtable on the role of the editorial processes in ensuring continuing quality and independence of journalism practised to the highest professional and ethical standards. The full programme of the two-day event is enclosed.
