Italian MEP Isabella De Monte is organising the event “THE CHALLENGES OF EUROPEAN JOURNALISM” which will be held in Brussels at the European Parliament, room ASP 3H1, on Tuesday, November 27th from 15:00 h to 17:00 h.
Fake news is one of the biggest challenges facing the media today. The authenticity of information has become an issue affecting the society and our democracy, both for printed and digital media. On social networks, the reach and effects of information spread occur at such a fast pace and so amplified that distorted, inaccurate or false information acquires a tremendous potential to cause real world impacts, within minutes, for millions of users. Recently, several public concerns about this problem were expressed because the role of journalists as democracy’s watchdogs is proving increasingly hazardous. Not only have thousands of them lost their job due to the crisis of this sector, but they are also at risk of being threatened, arrested or even killed in the line of duty. During our event, we will investigate these issues, focusing in particular on the challenges and opportunities of journalism. In particular in the first part of the event we will discuss the recent problems of Italian journalism while in the second part we will try to give an answer on the challenges of European journalism.
