The European Union delegation in Moscow has a programme to promote stronger cultural ties between Russia and the European Union. As part of that programme they have agreed to support a journalism programme that brings together young Russian journalists with other journalists from different parts of Europe in a series of activities and events. The Dublin Summer school programme falls under this programme as an initiative to provide Russian and EU journalists with an opportunity to network, to learn and to practice their journalism on key issues pertinent to the EU. The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament will hold a public hearing on "Media pluralism and freedom in the EU". The hearing will take place on Tuesday, 11 July 2017 from 9.00 - 11.00 in the European Parliament in Brussels, Room József Antall (4Q1). The trial of 17 journalists from daily newspaper Cumhuriyet will begin on 24 July 2017 and is expected to run until 28 July, in Istanbul.
The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) together with the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) will organise a two-day workshop on ''Editorial independence in the newsroom'' in Brussels. Fake news on digital media has become a potent means of manipulating political discourse around the world. Social media provides a platform for the free, and largely unregulated, widespread dissemination of fake news stories. Furthermore, it enables content creators to generate revenue from advertising.
