Ukraine: ETUC and EFJ demonstrate for peace in Brussels
The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) this morning joined the call to demonstrate for peace issued by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). A delegation from EFJ will join the demonstration at the Schuman roundabout in Brussels at 2pm.
Here is the statement released by Esther Lynch, ETUC Deputy General Secretary, this morning:
Last night Russia launched an attack on Ukraine. We are on the brink of a deadly war in Europe. There is a Summit in Brussels tonight bringing together Prime Ministers and Presidents from across the EU to discuss their response. For working people in Ukraine, in Russia and elsewhere including in the EU there is a grave danger of severe impact – to life and to justice.
In these circumstances trade unionists must call for peace, dialogue and protection of people.
Our assessment is that we should not waste the opportunity to use our demonstration to show that working people and their trade unions are absolutely resolute. Therefore, today’s demonstration will go ahead and we will raise our voices together for peace and we will also stand together in silence for peace in Ukraine. Our call will be ‘Protect the people – peace and dialogue, peace and justice, peace and democracy’.
