My priorities for the EFJ

Over the past three years, as President of the European Federation of Journalists, I’ve had the honour of working with great, brave people and witnessing incredible solidarity in these difficult and crisis-filled times. Conflicts, the war in Ukraine, rising violence against journalists, attacks on media freedom, lack of trust in journalism, technological change, and ever-present political pressure—it’s hard even to list all the fronts on which journalism is under attack. But what guided us and made sense of it all was the spirit of unity among EFJ members. We reacted, protected our colleagues, empowered our unions, and stood firm in our commitment to free, responsible, and independent journalism.

At the start of this journey, I wondered if I’d make it. But this experience only gives hope that, through such unity, journalism really can be defended. What I have experienced above all, and what gives strength and hope, is equality and respect—respect for each other and recognition and understanding of our challenges. That is what the European Federation of Journalists is all about: equality and mutual support. That’s what motivates me to keep trying.

Why I am standing

I am running again because I believe the EFJ must become even more present and a faithful ally to everyone who believe that journalism is the foundation of democracy. In the future, we must focus on implementing the European Media Freedom Act, seeking support for sustainable models of journalism funding, strengthening editorial independence, defending public service media. You already know I will be vocal in the fight against impunity, for the safety of journalists, and for better labour rights. I believe in an open, strong, and connected federation that does not act only in crises but constantly reinforces the strength of the profession.

At a time when journalism is under serious threats, we need more than just defence—we need vision and action. The EFJ must be a place of learning, empowerment, and coming together. We must invest in new generations of journalists and support those working in the most challenging conditions. Our federation is a living network of people fighting for truth, the public interest, and the protection of workers’ rights.

Who I am

Finally, let me briefly introduce myself to those who don’t know me. My name is Maja Sever. I am a journalist and trade unionist from Croatia. I served as President of the European Federation of Journalists in the previous term. I hope to have your trust and to continue on this path: for a stronger EFJ and for journalism that defends democracy.
