European Federation of Journalists

2025 Candidate for SC Member: Elena Tarifa Herrero

Who I am

I am a 52-year-old journalist from Barcelona, mother of two, with extensive experience in journalism, mainly as a freelancer in corporate communication, as well as in local politics management. A committed feminist and gender expert, I have led and participated in women journalists’ networks at all levels. As current Vice-General Secretary of the Federación de Sindicatos de Periodistas (FeSP), representing it at the European and International forums, EFJ GENDEG chair, and former board member and Equality responsible by the Catalan Journalists Union, I have worked for equality and journalists’ rights across Spain and Europe.

Why I am standing

With over 20 years of active union and gender equality work at regional, national, and European levels (including leading the EFJ GENDEG expert group), I want to take a step forward and contribute my experience to the EFJ Steering Committee. Committed to furthering joint action for journalists’ rights globally. I believe my international and multilingual background will help bridge different unions and realities.

My priorities for the EFJ

My priorities are to strengthen unionism in journalism, especially among younger professionals by developing specific campaigns, and ensure that gender equality and diversity are central to EFJ actions. I aim to restore and reinforce ties and joint work with the IFJ and within EFJ members, secure new financial resources, advance collective bargaining for equal working and safety conditions for journalists to be equivalent in all European countries, ensure effective EMFA implementation, enhance EFJ s voice with European institutions, and build strong alliances with civil society to defend the right to information.
