OSCE Annual South East Europe Media Conference

The annual OSCE South East Europe Media Conference will take place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 18-19 June. The annual conference will provide a platform for the sharing of best practices and to discuss current media freedom developments across the South East Europe region, with a particular focus this year on media development and sustainability, safety of journalists, legal environment for media freedom and examining sustainable solutions for public service broadcasters. The event will also host a number of side events. The EFJ GS Ricardo Gutiérrez will participate as an expert speaker on the “Safety of journalists” panel.

Following the EU Elections, it will be clear if online platforms were used to influence the outcome. Newly elected MEPs will have the opportunity to review the future strategy for the media sector, ensuring its sustainability and support to democracy. The current EU priority of a ‘’Digital Single Market’’ has not prevented disinformation and populism, nor the demise of many media. More can be done. Now is a chance to propose a new “top 10 priority" that MEPs and the incoming Commission can support. Dr Vaclav Stetka (PI) and Professor Sabina Mihelj (Co-I) have been awarded an ESRC standard research grant for a project titled "The Illiberal Turn? News Consumption, Political Polarisation and Democracy in Central and Eastern Europe" (£817,000). The project will carry out a comparative analysis of the relationship between news consumption and political attitudes in four CEE countries - Poland, Czechia, Hungary and Serbia, at a key point in time when the region is witnessing the rise of populist leaders, resurgence of illiberal nationalism, and a shift towards authoritarian forms of government.
