IFRRO, the International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations, has written an open letter to Google to express concerns regarding its recent announcement to restrict content from European-based press publishers as part of an “experiment”. Montenegro: MFRR partners call for the perpetrators of the attack on journalist Ana Raičković to be held accountable

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joined the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) partners in strongly condemning the verbal and physical attack on Ana Raičković, editor of the daily “Pobjeda”, as well as the attack on her family members. EMFA: First article enforced into national legislation

On 8 November 2024, Article 3 of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) on the right to access to a plurality of editorially independent media content came into force in the European Union. For the first time in EU law, Member States have a positive obligation to protect this right “for the benefit of free and democratic discourse“. Czech Republic: Journalists’ union supports licence fees increase to bail out public broadcasters

The Czech government’s new bill to increase TV and radio licence fees from 2025 aims to strengthen public service media funding and independence, say the International and European Federations of Journalists. The Federations join their affiliate, the Syndicate of Journalists of the Czech Republic, in calling for support for the bill as the public broadcaster struggles to operate effectively. Turkey: EFJ calls for withdrawal of “foreign agent” bill

Turkey is set to introduce a controversial new law aimed at combating so-called “foreign influence agents”, sparking concern among journalists and civil society groups that it could be used to suppress dissent. Georgia: Press freedom organisations demand protection for journalists

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joined the undersigned press freedom and freedom of expression organisations in expressing deep concern over incidents of intimidation, threats, and physical and verbal assaults against journalists covering the 26 October parliamentary elections in Georgia. Netherlands: Death threats sent to NU.nl must be punished

For six years, the media professionals working for the Dutch news portal NU.nl have been facing continuous harassment, including aggressive messages and death threats. The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joins its affiliate, the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ) in standing in full solidarity with the threatened media workers and calling on the Dutch authorities to prosecute the perpetrators.
