The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) signed an agreement on 18 December 2014 with the Union of Journalists and Media Workers of Czech Republic (OSNPM) in order to investigate the working conditions of Czech journalists and media workers. The project is implemented with the cooperation of Judith Reitstatter, from the Austrian union GPA-djp.

The online survey was launched on 19 May 2015. Around 2,500 journalists and media workers were invited to participate to the survey. The EFJ, OSNPM and GPA-djp analysed together the main outcomes of the survey during a round table conference, on 19 August 2015, in Prague.

The questionnaire focus mainly on labour rights. “This area is underestimated by the Czech media, journalists themselves and their employers as well,” explains Zdeněk Kučera, chairman of OSNPM.

“Over the past 25 years, journalists’ attention was focused primarily toward freedom of speech, access to information, relations with media ownership and the development of media houses. These are very serious topics. However, journalists’ status remained grossly underrated. A specific problem is the status of freelance journalists, which are increasingly numerous, particularly in regional media.”

The main findings of the survey are available on the EFJ website, here.

Serbia: Solidarity with Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation following another setback in its quest for justice

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joined the undersigned media freedom and journalist organisations in standing in full solidarity with the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation, which has been ordered to pay over one million dinars (€8,812)  in damages in a defamation case brought by those acquitted of the murder of the Serbian editor and newspaper founder, Slavko Ćuruvija. For 27 years, the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation has fought for justice for the assassination of Ćuruvija, who was gunned down outside his apartment in Belgrade in 1999.  On 15 May 2026, the Second Basic Court in Belgrade ruled that the Slavko Ćuruvija Foundation…

AgoraEU: European Parliament recognises journalism as democratic infrastructure, but proposed budget falls short of its own ambition

On 18 May 2026, the European Parliament published its draft position on the new AgoraEU programme, which constitutes the EU’s support for culture, media, and civil society within the Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2028-2034 – the EU’s long-term budget. The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) warns that the proposed budget allocation for journalism does not go far enough to match the scale of ambition outlined in the regulation and is a worrying sign of a lack of political ambition to meaningfully fund European journalism. The Parliament’s proposal creates a separate ‘Journalism and Information’ strand, which in principle could…

Poland: EFJ condemns planned layoffs at Ringier Axel Springer despite company’s profits

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joined its affiliates in Germany (dju in ver.di, DJV), Poland (Society of Journalists) and Switzerland (syndicom) in calling on the German Springer Group and the Swiss publisher Ringier to abandon their plans to cut jobs at their Polish joint venture, Ringier Axel Springer Polska (RASP).  According to information obtained by the dju, the company intends to reduce its workforce by almost 12%. With 1,350 employees, this could result in around 160 redundancies, despite RASP paying out 161 million zloty (around 37.86 million euros) to its shareholders in 2024. Against this backdrop, the planned redundancies…

EU Court of Justice ruling confirms platforms must pay for use of press content

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) yesterday ordered Meta to compensate Italian publishers for the use of their content. The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) welcomes an important ruling which upholds the right of Member States to require fair remuneration for the online use of press publications by service providers. The judgement, issued in a case between Meta and Italy’s media regulator AGCOM, concerns the transposition into Italian law of EU rules on press publishers’ rights. The Court confirmed that EU copyright law allows Member States to establish mechanisms ensuring fair remuneration for the use of press…
