The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) signed an agreement on 18 December 2014 with the Union of Journalists and Media Workers of Czech Republic (OSNPM) in order to investigate the working conditions of Czech journalists and media workers. The project is implemented with the cooperation of Judith Reitstatter, from the Austrian union GPA-djp.

The online survey was launched on 19 May 2015. Around 2,500 journalists and media workers were invited to participate to the survey. The EFJ, OSNPM and GPA-djp analysed together the main outcomes of the survey during a round table conference, on 19 August 2015, in Prague.

The questionnaire focus mainly on labour rights. “This area is underestimated by the Czech media, journalists themselves and their employers as well,” explains Zdeněk Kučera, chairman of OSNPM.

“Over the past 25 years, journalists’ attention was focused primarily toward freedom of speech, access to information, relations with media ownership and the development of media houses. These are very serious topics. However, journalists’ status remained grossly underrated. A specific problem is the status of freelance journalists, which are increasingly numerous, particularly in regional media.”

Slovakia

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), its Austrian union GPA-djp and the Slovak Union of Journalists (Slovenský syndikát novinárov) organized a meeting in Vienna, on 30 October 2014. Trade unionists and media students from both countries met in GPA-djp offices, in Vienna. The discussion on media convergence was launched by Dr. Roman Hummel, from the university of Salzburg.

Estonia

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the Estonian Union of Journalists (Eesti Ajakirjanike Liit, EAL) and the Union of Journalists in Finland (Suomen Journalistiliitto, UJF) agreed on 6 February 2015 to jointly implement the project “Workshops to Strengthen Journalists’ organisation in Estonia”.

The main objective of the project is to strengthen journalists’ organisation in Estonia, through three activities:

  • a freelance workshop in Helsinki,
  • a radio & TV negotiators workshop in Helsinki,
  • an authors’ rights seminar in Tallinn.

An action plan will be proposed for the next period.

Greece: Violent and arbitrary arrest of journalist Giorgos Androutsos must be investigated

On 31 October 2024, Giorgos Androutsos, a Greek journalist for the newspaper “Rizospastis”, was violently attacked and arrested by police while covering protests by seasonal firefighters in front of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. The journalist was released from custody on 1 November. Bosnia and Herzegovina: MFRR and SafeJournalists urgently call for stronger protection for journalist Nataša Miljanović Zubac 

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joined the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) partners and the SafeJournalists Network (SJN) in calling for thorough and swift investigations into numerous threats against Nataša Miljanović Zubac, a journalist for the Radio Television of Republika Srpska (RTRS). Since the arson attack on her car in 2022, Zubac has been targeted by at least seven criminal acts, all unpunished. The MFRR partners and SJN also urge the Republika Srpska Ministry of Interior and the Trebinje District Prosecutor’s Office to increase police protection to prevent further threats to the life of the journalist. COP29: EU leaders should press Azerbaijani authorities to end assault on government critics

In advance of COP29, the 29th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Baku, Azerbaijan, the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joined 16 international human rights organisations in calling on EU leaders to draw urgent attention to and raise directly with the government of Azerbaijan the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.  Azerbaijan has a record of human rights abuse that has seriously worsened over the last two years with the government targeting the remaining vestiges of independent media and civil society including human rights defenders. Crime against journalists: Impunity is not declining in Europe

On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (2 November), the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) remembers all the journalists in Europe who lost their lives, gave up their safety and their freedom for journalism, and for which justice has still not been served.  Their names are Daphne Caruana Galizia (Malta), Giorgos Karaivaz (Greece), Jan Kuciak (Slovakia), but also Slavko Curuvija (Serbia), Martin O’Hagan (Northern Ireland), Hrant Dink (Turkey). Georgia: Press freedom organisations demand protection for journalists

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joined the undersigned press freedom and freedom of expression organisations in expressing deep concern over incidents of intimidation, threats, and physical and verbal assaults against journalists covering the 26 October parliamentary elections in Georgia. The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) documented at least 30 election-related media freedom violations involving 34 media professionals.
