Silence Hate final conference – Changing words, change the world, 18 November, Brussels

Online hate speech is a worrying and complex phenomenon, which has deep cultural and social roots and brings new questions and challenges to the issue of freedom of expression on the internet.

Can a new law be a solution to tackle online hate speech or a curb on freedom of expression? How can we silence hate without silencing media freedom?

Only a collective commitment at the cultural and educational level can be the basis to counter it, promoting at the same time freedom and participation.

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) will organise a final conference on 18 November in Brussels within the two-year EU-funded project “Silence Hate” with partner organisations – COSPE, Media Diversity Institute (MDI), Amnesty International Italy, Amnesty International Poland, KARPOS, Zaffiria, IKME.

The final conference will bring together leading journalists, educators and non-governmental organisations who are active in this field. Belgian cartoonist, Nicolas Vadot, will join our debates and kindly accepted to draw cartoons live. Representative from Google will share his view on the role of internet platform to counter online hate speech. (See detailed agenda)

Silence Hate aims at combating and preventing online hate speech against migrants and refugees by developing new and creative counter-narratives. The project has organised a European media camp, training courses, workshops and media productions involving journalists, activists, teachers and young people in Belgium, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Poland and United Kingdom.

Some of the results of the project, including the media productions, will be featured during the conference.

We still have a couple of spaces left, if you are in Brussels on 18 November. Please join us and register at this link before 11 November 2019.

The event received the financial support of Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit.
