European Federation of Journalists

2025 Candidate for SC Member: Ago Gaškov

My priorities for the EFJ

One of the most important issues in Europe is the funding of public service broadcasting. This problem is particularly acute in Eastern Europe. In Estonia, public service broadcasting works well, but very painful cuts have had to be made in the last year. Even the relatively wealthy Finnish public service broadcaster YLE has had to make serious cuts. It is very important that the EFJ Steering Committee seeks solutions for developing a sustainable funding model for public service broadcasting.

It is equally important that public service and private media find ways to cooperate so that they are not merely competitors.

Why I am standing

The media and the entire media landscape are undergoing very turbulent developments, and I want to be part of this and influence it.

Who I am

I have worked in public service broadcasting for a very long time. I am currently a freelance reporter who also contributes to a private channel. I have worked for both Estonian and Russian-language television and radio channels and have seen how a communist propaganda channel has been transformed into a high-quality public service broadcaster. I have also been the vice-chair of the Estonian Association of Journalists for a long time.
