Italy: sports journalist Luca Esposito has been killed in Eboli
Sports journalist Luca Esposito has been killed in Eboli (southern Italy). His charred body has been identified on a piece of farmland in Cioffi. The European and International Federations of Journalists (EFJ-IFJ) join their Italian affiliate FNSI in calling for a thorough investigation to determine whether the crime was linked to his work as a journalist.
Luca Esposito, 53, was an employee of the Regional Environmental Agency (Arpac) in Avellino, but was best known as a freelance sports journalist: he contributed to the daily newspaper “La Città di Salerno” and the TV channel “Otto Channel”, and was editor-in-chief of the football news website “Tuttosalernitana.com”.
Luca Esposito (whose real first name is Luigi) is believed to have been shot dead and then burnt alive. His charred body was discovered when the fire brigade attended the scene. The body was identified by his car, which had been abandoned at the scene. The Salerno Public Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case.
The motives behind the crime are not known. The EFJ and the IFJ call on the Italian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation as quickly as possible in order to establish any causal links between the crime and the victim’s journalistic activities. The IFJ and the EFJ also wish to express their condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.
