The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) signed an agreement on 18 December 2014 with the Union of Journalists and Media Workers of Czech Republic (OSNPM) in order to investigate the working conditions of Czech journalists and media workers. The project is implemented with the cooperation of Judith Reitstatter, from the Austrian union GPA-djp.

The online survey was launched on 19 May 2015. Around 2,500 journalists and media workers were invited to participate to the survey. The EFJ, OSNPM and GPA-djp analysed together the main outcomes of the survey during a round table conference, on 19 August 2015, in Prague.

The questionnaire focus mainly on labour rights. “This area is underestimated by the Czech media, journalists themselves and their employers as well,” explains Zdeněk Kučera, chairman of OSNPM.

“Over the past 25 years, journalists’ attention was focused primarily toward freedom of speech, access to information, relations with media ownership and the development of media houses. These are very serious topics. However, journalists’ status remained grossly underrated. A specific problem is the status of freelance journalists, which are increasingly numerous, particularly in regional media.”

Slovakia

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), its Austrian union GPA-djp and the Slovak Union of Journalists (Slovenský syndikát novinárov) organized a meeting in Vienna, on 30 October 2014. Trade unionists and media students from both countries met in GPA-djp offices, in Vienna. The discussion on media convergence was launched by Dr. Roman Hummel, from the university of Salzburg.

Estonia

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the Estonian Union of Journalists (Eesti Ajakirjanike Liit, EAL) and the Union of Journalists in Finland (Suomen Journalistiliitto, UJF) agreed on 6 February 2015 to jointly implement the project “Workshops to Strengthen Journalists’ organisation in Estonia”.

The main objective of the project is to strengthen journalists’ organisation in Estonia, through three activities:

  • a freelance workshop in Helsinki,
  • a radio & TV negotiators workshop in Helsinki,
  • an authors’ rights seminar in Tallinn.

An action plan will be proposed for the next period.

France: MFRR partners and RSF to carry out media freedom mission in Paris

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), its partner organisations from the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), and Reporters Without Borders (RSF) will travel to Paris from 9 to 11 June 2026 to assess the current state of media freedom in France, less than a year before the presidential elections.  While France’s legal and regulatory framework is generally supportive of media freedom, there has been an alarming increase in the number and severity of attacks documented on journalists and media outlets in recent years. Italy: Arson attack on journalist’s home after prior threats

Italian journalist Adriano Cappellari’s home in Enego, northeastern Italy, was targeted in an arson attack on 31 May. The journalist had previously received threatening letters due to his reporting. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) join their affiliate, the Federazione Nazionale Stampa Italiana (FNSI), in expressing solidarity with Cappellari and calling for a prompt investigation into this attack. EFJ to hold its Annual Meeting in Ankara, Turkey, on 18-19 June 2026

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) will hold its annual meeting in Ankara, Turkey. Around 70 journalists and trade union representatives are expected to meet on 18-19 June 2026. Hungary: Threats against the country’s last progressive daily newspaper

The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) joins its Hungarian affiliates, HPU and MUOSZ, in condemning the manoeuvres that led to the closure of the print edition of Népszava, the largest national political daily in Hungary and the last and only remaining liberal, social democratic political daily in the country. Ukraine: Russian missile-and-drone attack damaged six media offices in Kyiv

UPDATE (26/05/2026): NUJU has also reported damage to the office of its Kyiv regional organisation, located on Khreshchatyk Street in central Kyiv. The blast wave damaged windows and scattered glass inside the premises.
